Ainsley Butler

Senior Advisor, Policy Engagement and Outreach

Ainsley Butler is a huge fan of social enterprises, organizations and businesses that seek to benefit society in Canada and abroad. Ainsley is an advocate for responsible business practices, including local content and responsible sourcing. As an international development practitioner, she is focused on economic development, women’s economic empowerment and international trade promotion.

Most recently, Ainsley lead the development and implementation of the first-ever standards that improve socio-economic conditions of artisanal diamond mining and contribute to the development of value chains that provide opportunities for responsible sourcing from artisanal diamond production. She is currently co-chair of the Responsible Jewellery Council’s Standards Committee.

She has lead field visits to cities in the Caribbean, South America, Asia and Africa to establish trade promotion linkages between Canada and developing countries. For nine years at Building Markets, Ainsley lead several teams to develop over $1 billion in business opportunities for small and medium sized enterprises in fragile and conflict-affected states. Ainsley also developed the local procurement strategy for Canada’s largest project in Afghanistan, the Arghandab Irrigation Rehabilitation Project.

She is active in her community as a board member of the Organization for Women in International Trade (OWIT-Ottawa) and Artistri Sud, a social enterprise that empowers women entrepreneurs to grow vibrant and sustainable micro-enterprises. Ainsley is a graduate of the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris, was a visiting graduate fellow at New York University and holds an Honours Bachelor’s degree from Carleton University.
