Financing for Development Briefing

The next Financing for Development (FfD) conference takes place in July 2015 in Ethiopia. This briefing note analyzes what is different and what is the same this time around, compared to the original Monterrey Consensus agenda that accompanied the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

If the MDGs were broad, the so called post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) put them to shame. The SDG framework is so unwieldy that some have argued it is ‘worse than useless’. The emerging FfD agenda, while also more expansive than the Monterrey Consensus, presents an opportunity to lend much needed realism and practicality to the SDGs.

This briefing note links to resources and highlights key issues to watch, including: the modernizing foreign aid debates; Canada’s position and role – which should be one of bringing greater realism to a process that otherwise seems to be heading for an unfocused and unconvincing outcome; redesigning development finance; and expectations surrounding domestic revenue mobilization in developing countries.
